Here’s a look back at previous by-elections in the east of England.
The Mid Bedfordshire by-election in 2023, won by Labour, drew attention to the lack of infrastructure on new housing developments and the Corby by-election of 2012 put the future of Kettering Hospital into the spotlight.
Was it any coincidence that after the Wellingborough by-election in 2024, which thrust the issue of “left-behind communities” into the spotlight, the town became one of the first places to receive Labour’s “Pride in Place” funding?
When Clacton’s last by-election took place in 2014, it was triggered when the sitting MP Douglas Carswell quit the Conservatives to join Farage’s old party UKIP. He made his resignation as MP not just about the Conservative government’s policy on an EU referendum, but also access to local NHS services, which appeared to improve after he won the seat again.
But in the Clacton by-election of 2026, there has been no local issue in the campaign.
In fact, there has hardly been any discussion of local issues. The one organised hustings, external we know about, at Clacton-on-Sea’s Princes Theatre, attracted 14 of the 34 candidates, and Farage did not attend.
While there was talk about improving the town’s High Street, cleaning up the beach and creating more jobs, there was no serious debate about how this would be done.
