The U.S. has launched an investigation into Germany’s pharma policies over what it referred to as “persistent underpayment” for medicines as the European country looks to limit spiraling healthcare costs, including spending on drugs. “President Trump has made clear that American patients should not be shouldering a disproportionate share of global pharmaceutical research and development,” said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in a statement late Thursday. “I am particularly concerned with news that Germany is fast-tracking legislation that would further reduce its spending on innovative pharmaceuticals,” he said, calling it “a serious step backwards.” In April, Germany proposed overhauling its health insurance system…
Shares of Danish biotech Zealand Pharma recently plunged after detailed data on its weight loss drug survodutide showed far higher patient dropout rates than leading treatments, prompting analysts to slash peak sales forecasts and rethink the company’s obesity strategy. But while the market’s enthusiasm for the drug has meaningfully cooled, investors are shifting focus to Zealand’s amylin-based medicine, petrelintide, as the next potential driver of the stock, setting it up for an important year ahead. The Copenhagen-listed stock tumbled 23% earlier this month after survodutide, which Zealand has licensed to Boeringer Ingelheim, showed side effects grave enough for 19% of patients to…

Bernie Sanders has unveiled an aggressive plan to transfer trillions from leading AI firms to the public, and, to the likely horror of AI firms, it goes even further than expected to give Americans more control over the AI industry. Any AI firm that does $200 million in annual AI sales would be subject to the tax, as would any new firm…

Some of the SpaceX investors on Kahlon’s ledger are easy to identify: the Indian politician Abhishek Singhvi; Betsy DeVos, the former US secretary of education; a British Virgin Islands company owned by Indonesian billionaires. But others on the list are shell companies whose ultimate owners remain hidden. One such company is a Delaware LLC called HAL9001 Partners Fund I, which invested roughly $10 million in a SpaceX fund in 2020. The incorporation documents for HAL9001 were signed by the venture capitalist Roman Sobachevskiy. The Treasury Department recently fined a company that was co-owned by Sobachevskiy hundreds of millions of dollars…
Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, paving the way for him to challenge Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader. “Everyone knows that politics isn’t working,” he says in his acceptance speech. “Tonight could, just could, be the turning point”. Burnham previously said he would seek to enter any Labour leadership contest, where he would need the support of at least 81 Labour MPs to join the race. The newly-elected MP for Makerfield, who held cabinet positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, says he always knew he would seek to return to Westminster to “complete that unfinished business” so…
