Binance breach puts custody at center of crypto infrastructure trade

The $6.3 billion Binance hack could accelerate a shift in how investors value cryptocurrency companies, putting a greater premium on custody providers and the infrastructure needed to securely hold and protect digital assets.

Much of crypto’s evolution this year has involved companies moving past their reliance on trading volumes and transaction fees, to focus instead on building the infrastructure connecting digital assets with traditional finance. Last Thursday’s breach adds a new dimension, bringing cybersecurity, custody, compliance and balance-sheet resilience into sharper focus.

Importantly, the Binance breach was not an indictment of crypto itself, or a case of leadership-driven fraud, as with FTX in late 2022. Instead, Binance’s leadership moved quickly to contain the fallout, protect customers and commit the exchange’s own resources to cover losses.

On Tuesday, Binance CEO Richard Teng told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that the company has replenished 98% of $6.34 billion in affected assets, and that it is still in the process of purchasing outstanding, more illiquid assets.

Management’s response, alongside efforts elsewhere in the industry to boost confidence, helped prevent a security breach from escalating into a broader crisis of confidence. For example, Tether, Circle, Ripple and others moved quickly to freeze or restrict access to about $3 billion in stolen assets; Coinbase blocked transfers to compromised wallets and offered Binance direct assistance.

The hack could even help shape the next phase of the crypto infrastructure trade. The new winners may not just be the businesses with the most users, volume or assets under custody, but the ones that can also demonstrate they’re able to protect those assets under extreme duress.

    Cybersecurity and protection

“Which company has the resources to invest in cybersecurity and protect customer funds? For a smaller company, it could be much harder because once these crypto companies become infrastructure plays, providing the well for tokenization … they need to have the compliance and control in place so that a similar hacking will not happen or can be minimized,” Owen Lau, senior analyst at ClearStreet, told CNBC. “Larger companies have more resources that could give them some advantage.”

    Custody is central.

While institutional investors have increasingly embraced digital assets, broader adoption depends on confidence that those assets can be securely held, accessed and transferred. The Binance breach highlights the importance of that infrastructure, and could increase demand for specialized custodians and platforms with established asset-protection capabilities.

Coinbase has operated a dedicated institutional custody business since 2018. Circle entered the custody business this year, after the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted it approval to operate as a trust bank. In the past few years, Ripple and Kraken have also launched custody businesses.

    Smaller players too

Still, smaller players compete in the space as well. Small cap crypto exchange stock Gemini Space Station has offered custody services since 2019. BitGo Holdings, founded in 2013, is one of the earliest players in institutional crypto custody and infrastructure, with a reputation for security and serving major institutions.

The shift could also drive consolidation as companies look to buy capabilities, deepen their infrastructure offerings and achieve the scale needed to compete, Lau said.

The more consequential structural shift may be the separation of custody from execution, according to Morgan Stanley.

“Crypto exchanges have historically combined trading, custody, and settlement within vertically integrated platforms, concentrating operational risk. Repeated security breaches could encourage investors to move assets toward independent custody while continuing to trade on CEXs,” the firm’s analyst Felix Stratmann said in a note Monday,” referring to centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.

“This would preserve the role of centralized exchanges as liquidity and execution venues, while potentially benefiting regulated custodians, including banks, as institutional investors place greater emphasis on asset segregation, operational resilience, and investor protection,” Stratmann said.
